Ed Bickert’s Solo on Manha de Carnaval
I recently posted a lesson teaching various chord melody segments by Ed Bickert, one of my all time favorite guitarists who sadly is no longer with us. As underrated as many of us feel he was, I was happy to learn from the comments that he has a small cult-like following, just as eager as myself to learn everything possible from his playing!
So for this lesson I have transcribed the very last chorus of his solo on, “Manha de Carnaval”, a classic bossa nova also known as the theme from “Black Orpheus”. This is off his first album as a leader which is a live trio performance, and believe me… it is rich in motif development and chord melody featuring some modern jazz voicings!
In the lesson, after playing the transcription, I break down the solo measure by measure and explain everything he is doing. Lots to learn here!

Thank you, Richie. As you know, I cannot get enough of Ed Bickert’s beautiful music. In the comments for the prior Ed Bickert presentation, I requested more lessons involving Ed’s music. This week’s material certainly hits the spot; moreover, it includes some really sophisticated chord melody. Incredible!
