Blue Bossa – George Benson Solo

by | George Benson, Jazz Improvisation

Hope you had a chance to check out my recent lesson on harmonizing “Blue Bossa” using the 6th diminished concept associated with Barry Harris. As a follow up,  I decided to transcribe one of my favorite improvised solos over Blue Bossa. And it’s by the great George Benson, off an album titled “Live at Casa Caribe” recorded in 1973.

If you’ve never heard this album, I have to warn you that the quality of the recording is terrible and to make matters worse, the piano is out of tune! Nonetheless, the important thing is that you can understand every note being played, and the overall performance is awesome. Best of all is Benson’s inventive solo on Blue Bossa which is full of great minor key bebop vocabulary! So be sure to take this opportunity to explore how this jazz guitar master approaches the changes to this popular standard.
