In this video lesson you will learn Wes Montgomery’s solo on Satin Doll from the album: “A Dynamic New Sound”.
Richie’s Notes: I transcribed this solo over 20 years ago before transcription software existed. Upon listening to it again and comparing it to the original recording, I noticed there are a couple of notes that I varied (and work!), but other than that it is accurate.
PDF & AUDIO DOWNLOAD:
The “Satin Doll -Wes Montgomery Solo” lesson files, can be downloaded for $6.50. The download includes the following files: PDFs with both regular notation and detailed TAB for the first chorus of Wes’ solo, Band in a Box with the solo and accompaniment, and also a Midi file if you rather practice using “Guitar Pro” or the free downloadable notation app: “Muse Score”.
Very good lessons
Thanks Master for your fantastic dedication… I’m so happy for enjoy so brilliant work, thanks again from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Gracias Paco! Como esta la escena del jazz en la Gran Canaria? Siempre quize conocer…Saludos, Richie
HI RICHIE!
Tks a lot for ur great job but i have a request about the lesson on satin doll.
It would be great if you can make a video only with the chords to learn to accompagne the solo player.
J ‘espere que tu repondras cette fois ci et merci encore un ptit coucou de tahiti not so far from ur place
I agree with Alain Fournier – a corresponding lesson showing the chords as you’ve played them would be helpful. Thanks for the lesson.
Glad you enjoyed the lesson! While I read and played the solo from the transcription, the chords were totally improvised on the spot. Honestly I don’t even remember what voicings I played. The possibilities over such a progression are numerous. That said, I plan to offer a comprehensive course on guitar applied harmony, chord melody and comping sometime next year.
I feel inside of music with your touch and explanation. Very thanks Master, you’re a cool person.
Gracias Pedro!
I really appreciate your job. Great. Thanks a lot. I will recomend your website to every guitarists I know.
Thanks…much appreciated!
My first contact with your work. Great, interesting and promising! Roland.
Thanks Roland…Enjoy!
Hi Richie….found your site after watching your lesson on Satin Doll ( Wes ) transcription. Thank you very much !!
Will be following along on your website !
Thx !
Doug
Thanks Doug, Enjoy!
Thanks !Comment
Thanks Richie for the amazing ongoing resource. Like Tom (above) I have been playing for many years and have fallen into relying on many old pattern/habits. Your work, including the bebop improv series which I am working through, is helping to revitalise and enhance my playing, and also helping me to understand what I have been doing instinctively, oh and what I have been doing errrr…wrong!
Cheers,
Neil
Glad to be of service Neil, thanks!
Hello Richie
It is a good pedagogy to put at the disposal of your pupils pieces known like this one. We better learn jazz like this
Thanks Vincent!
Bonjour Richie!
Merci pour ton travail.
Est- il possible de voir les accords
Hey Rich,
Thanks for putting this together. (Satin Doll) I’m really enjoying working on this. Your step by step along with the notation and tab has made it a little less challening to learn. Great solo, and chord progression. Keep it coming!
Thanks again.
Cisco
Thanks Francisco…more to come!
Hi Thanks for all the info I feel like I’m starting all over again.
I’ve been playing since the 50s and this is the first time I’ve copied runs etc I just think key, tempo and then just let my brain take over I never know where my fingers are going until after I’ve played the notes/runs/chord so looking forward to learning from you thank you again and best regards Tom
Thanks Tom…Enjoy!
This is a fantastic short solo that is really fun to learn; the way Wes build motifs is very catchy. Thank you for showing us how it is done. In addition to the shorter phrases you have provided, I find these short but full length solos (or full choruses of longer solos) very helpful in learning how to develop phrasing across the entire changes of tunes.
Yes, it’s good to hear the development of the phrases in context!
Thanks for this Richie. I particularly like the way you break done the solo.
Thanks…enjoy!
Hi Master: Thanks a lot for this magnificent transcription. You are really showing us the way the masters played with this amazing work. Receive my gratitude.
Roberto from Argentina
My pleasure!
