Solar – Chord Melody

by | Chord Melody, Miles Davis

This is the first in a series of lessons I’ve entitled “Standards for Jazz Guitar”. In them I first teach you the main single line melody to a chosen standard, followed by a detailed harmonic analysis. After this I demonstrate how I go about and harmonize each note, concluding with a chord melody arrangement you can play! And in case you’re wondering, unlike my fingerstyle chord melody lessons for solo guitar, these are much simpler and can be used in a combo setting.

If you’ve ever wanted to understand how jazz harmony works , as well as what scales to employ in order to improvise over your favorite standards, there is a lot you can learn here.

For our first episode I have chosen a 12 measure standard. I am referring to “Solar” by Miles Davis. And believe me when I say there is a lot to learn within this short tune!

Your contribution is much appreciated, as it helps support the site and allows me to keep investing the long hours required to produce these lessons. The download includes: a 2 PDFs (leadsheet and chord melody) with both regular notation and TAB, an MP3 of the arrangement and a backing track, as well as a Band in a Box File.

An excellent lesson. While the chord melody is not difficult to play, it throws up a mass of material that brilliantly explains what you intuitively already know. Well worth continuing on a regular basis.
