Miles Davis Solo on “Autumn Leaves”
In this video I teach a solo that I believe every serious jazz student should learn, regardless of what instrument they play! I’m referring of course to Miles Davis’ solo over Autumn Leaves, off the classic Cannonball Adderley album entitled “Something Else”.
This rendition of Autumn Leaves is played at a fairly relaxed tempo and features Miles’ signature use of space between his phrases. Even though it’s not technically demanding to play, I believe the real challenge lies in emulating Miles’ elastic sense of timing. Listen to how he anticipates some notes while playing others slightly behind the beat. In the video I play along with the recording and though I found the notes fairly easy to play… doing so in unison with Miles took some practice!
