Neo-Soul Jazz Chord Melody

by | Chord Melody

If from the title, “If Jimi Played Jazz” on the thumbnail, you’re wondering what on earth Hendrix has to do with jazz, please keep an open mind and read on…

There are several unique clues in Jimi’s playing that lead us to imagine what he might have sounded like if he kept evolving and eventually approached a jazz progression. And I’m talking mainly about the harmonic devices featured in his clean chordal playing, many of which he picked up from Rhythm and Blues guitarists. Think “Little Wing” or “Castles Made of Sand”

In this lesson I show you how many of Jimi’s chordal concepts can easily be adapted to a sophisticated jazz progression. In doing so, I give you a glimpse of what he might have sounded like using his style to play over the changes to “All The Things You Are” . I call it Neo-Soul Jazz chord melody!
