Moanin’
Can you spare a minute? That’s roughly how long this chord melody video lasts! You might or might not know the tune, but it has become part of most jazz musicians repertoire.
“Moanin‘” was written by pianist Bobby Timmons and first recorded, by Art Blakey‘s band the Jazz Messengers, on October 30, 1958. It is considered one of the tunes that helped to generate the “Hard Bop” style of the late ’50s and early ’60s. Influenced by blues and gospel, “Moanin‘” makes use of call-and-response technique between the piano and horns. Of course you’ll have to settle for hearing me play both parts solely on guitar…which is quite fun if you decide to learn it.
