La Vie En Rose- Chord Melody

by | Chord Melody

I’m sure many of you guitarists have heard this tune countless of times even though you’ve probably never actually played it…and I’m referring to “La Vie en Rose” written by french vocalist Edith Piaf back in 1945 right as World War 2 was ending. And it’s interesting to note that its title in french is an expression which translates to English as “seeing life through rose colored glasses”.

Now, even though this piece is not necessarily a part of the mainstream jazz repertoire, it features some exemplary harmonic and melodic features that every player can learn from. I especially want to point out the fact that the original is written in C major and except for the note C# which appears once….. IT IS ENTIRELY DIATONIC! So, basically it just uses the notes of the C major scale. Yet, it keeps the listener’s ear engaged through its ongoing motif development. But enough said! Check out my chord melody arrangement followed by a chorus of improvisation.
