The Minor 6th Chord: When & How To Use It!
How often do you use the minor 6th chord? If you’re like most guitarists, your answer is probably going to be…once in a blue moon! Yet this is a very useful chord, especially when playing standards in minor keys. When used in the right places, it can add a fresh new color to a harmony routinely dominated by minor 7th chords. In addition, the choice of scales we can use to improvise over it, is also a resource that you will want to explore when creating your lines.
In this week’s video lesson, I show you when and how to use the often neglected minor 6th chord. Not only do I show you what chords you can substitute for it, but I also teach you various very cool ways to improvise over it. Finally, I demonstrate and show you how to apply this information right away to several standards that I’m sure you’re familiar with!

Hi Richie Zellon,
You have created a treasure trove of the entire jazz idiom on your website.
I’m so grateful to you for your instruction. I’m a budding jazz guitarist with a long history in rock.
I have more time now to devote to my studies and I look forward to exploring your many compilations in the different styles.
Warm regards,
John Hart
Thanks John…enjoy!
Hello, 🙂
I started with the Minor 6th chord lesson hoping that it is beginner lesson. So didn’t do me much coz obviously i need basic lesson to start with. Which is the beginner’s lesson order? How to start with considering that I’m jazz guitar dummy! Thanx 🙂
Sorry but there is no order for the lessons as this is not meant to be a course. I don’t think I have any beginner lessons here. However, I do teach beginning jazz guitarists through private online lessons and I’ve also got an online course if you’re interested.
