Autumn Leaves- George Benson Solo

by | George Benson, Jazz Improvisation

In this video lesson, I’m digging into a George Benson Autumn Leaves solo I transcribed from his recent album, “Dreams Do Come True”. Autumn Leaves is a standard we all know inside and out, but trust me, there’s plenty to learn here. George Benson’s solo has everything I love: it’s melodic, it swings hard, it breathes, it develops motifs, and it moves all over the neck. George plays it without a pick and his tone is gorgeous, so I went pickless too when I played it for you.

After the full performance, I break down two of George Benson’s dominant triplet lines that really grabbed me and show you how to make them part of your own vocabulary. But those two lines are just the tip of the iceberg. This solo is packed with melodic ideas you can take well beyond Autumn Leaves and apply to countless other standards. My advice is to learn the whole solo in context first, so you really absorb how George builds his ideas, and then start pulling out your favorite pieces. And if you have a favorite Autumn Leaves recording, let me know in the YouTube comments. I’ve already transcribed several versions of this iconic standard, and I’m always on the hunt for more great Autumn Leaves solos to dig into!
