I Remember You- Chord Melody
In this lesson, I share my chord melody arrangement of the 1941 classic “I Remember You” by Victor Schertzinger and Johnny Mercer. I play it two ways. First, I perform the arrangement and then improvise over the changes in a trio setting. Then I play it as a solo guitar rubato version, the Italian term for “robbing” time by freely pushing and pulling the tempo. Afterward, I break down my approach, including fuller voicings and improvised lines, to give you ideas for adapting this and other chord melody arrangements to solo guitar.
I also take a closer look at what makes “I Remember You” so special harmonically. You’ll hear an interesting chord substitution right in the opening, and a bridge that travels through several temporary key modulations before finding its way back home. On top of that, the song breaks away from the usual 32 bar standard with a unique 36 measure form.
